Imam Shamil ق was the political, military, and spiritual master of North Caucasian resistance to Imperial Russia in the 1800s, the third Imam of the Caucasian Imamate, and a Sunni Muslim Shaykh of the Naqshbandi Sufi Tariqa. He declared a defensive Jihad against Russia and gained the support of Chechens, Dagestanians, and to some extent, Circassians. The Ulema state that after the Prophetﷺ and his associates, Imam Shamil ق was one of the most fairest of Imams.
Imam Shamil ق was a true Ustaad of the Naqshbandi Tariqah. The Daghestani Naqshbandi Shaykh Shu‘ayb b. Idris al-Bagini states in his Ṭabaqāt al-ḫwājagān al-naqšbandiyya wa sādāt al-mašāʾiḫ al-ḫālidiyya al-maḥmūdiyya that besides both Shaykh Muhammad Yaraghi and Shaykh Jamaluddin Kumukhi, Imam Shamil ق was also given permission (ijazah) by Shaykh Ismail Kurdumeri.
